Halloween (or Hallowe’en) is a mostly national holiday celebrated on the evening of October 31; today it is often celebrated in the morning and afternoon as well. Halloween activities include trick-or-treating, ghost tours, bonfires, costume parties, visiting haunted attractions, carving jack-o’-lanterns, reading scary stories, and watching horror movies. Irish and Scottish immigrants carried versions of the tradition to North America in the nineteenth century. Other western countries embraced the holiday in the late twentieth century. Halloween is celebrated in several countries of the Western world, most commonly in the United States, Canada, Ireland, Puerto Rico, Japan, Australia, the United Kingdom, and at times in parts of New Zealand. In Sweden, the All Saints’ official holiday takes place on the first Saturday of November.
In the Philippines people normally called it All Saints/Souls day. Nov.1 they call it All saints day and Nov. 2 is the all souls day. There are great preparations they will do for that occasion. Sam Raimi and Tobey Maguire recently put to end months of gossip and signed on the dotted line for a fourth and fifth installment of "Spider-Man." The only principle not yet confirmed for the wildly successful franchise is Kirsten Dunst as Mary Jane Watson, though she’s made recent statements that she wants to continue with the series. "Kirsten, I’d love to work with her again," Raimi told MTV’s Splashpage: "I hope she’ll be written into it. I couldn’t imagine making one without her, and I think she’s an important part of the movies."
Maguire will, of course, return as Peter Parker though Raimi’s exact connection to the production seems a bit more up in the air. "I’m really excited about Spider-Man, and I’m hoping to direct it," said Raimi. "I don’t have a script yet, but production would start probably by March of 2010, I’m guessing. It sounds like a long time away, but we need a script first, and a lot of pre-production has to take place."
There’s also been much talk over whether or not the two movies will be shot back-to-back, like the "Lord of the Rings" films. As Raimi tells it, that too has yet to be determined. "It’s [Sony Pictures Studio Head] Amy Pascal’s decision. I don’t think it has been decided yet, and she’s the one that’s really going to make that decision; I’m really curious myself."
Though there are no details on the story for Spider-Man 4 and 5, Raimi has hinted that the two movies will be connected. "If Tobey and me, and all the producers, like the story for two pictures and Amy wanted to do it, then we would do it. It just hasn’t been written yet." Screenwriter James Vanderbilt, who wrote Zodiac, has been signed on to write the script. Sony is still casting for the films’ villain, though internet speculation has lead to talk of Dr. Curt Connors, played by Dylan Baker, turning into The Lizard as he did in the comic series. There is even talk of Mary Jane’s astronaut ex-fiancée John Jameson undergoing a transformation into Man-Wolf.
Raimi has admitted previously that shooting Spider-Man 3 was exhausting, so he’s understandably daunted by the prospect of shooting two special-effects laden blockbusters at the same time. "It would be a real endurance test, probably only Peter Jackson knows how hard something like that would be."
Two seniors from the Information Technology Education (ITE) Program of this university bagged the fourth spot in the annual IT Quiz Tournament: The 3rd Mindanao Tertiary Schools ICT Quiz Show which was held last October 3, 2008 at the Atrium of Limketkai Center, Cagayan de Oro City as one of the culminating activities of the ORO BEST EXPO 2008.
Lagging behind in the easy round, ranking only at seventh place, Catherine Remolleno, BSCS – 4, and Aiza Loraine Mencidor BSIT – 4, beat the odds with very tight scores against other competing schools in the average and difficult rounds, slowly advancing to the 4th rank.
The team made it to the final five with Bukidnon State University ranking first, Mindanao Polytechnic State College in the 2nd place, AMA CLC - CDO in the third, and MSU-IIT tailing behind at fifth place. The UIC ITE team gained the fourth spot after the nerve-breaking questions in the difficult round.
This writer, being the coach, was convinced that the team, who was Region XI’s sole representative, would make it to the top five. With less than a week preparation, the contestants relied on each other’s individual forte in the different fields of ICT, battling it out with twelve other schools and universities all over Mindanao. The champion brought home 12,000 pesos, a plaque, certificates, and a full AUTOCAD scholarship from STI College.
Among the topics covered in the competition were Data Communications and Networks, Operating System, Programming Languages, Databases, Data Structures, Software Engineering, System Analysis and Design, ICT Trends, Compiler Designs, Logic Design, and Issues on IT Security. Oro Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and STI – Cagayan de Oro organized the said event.
Last year, UIC Team ranked third with Mechelle Dimas, Katherine Dacanay, and Mary Grace Ignacio as participants. The whole program is looking forward to “really getting the bacon; be champions”, in the coming 2009 Mindanao-Wide IT Quiz Tournament.

Lindsay Lohan has confirmed what the world has guessed: She’s been dating Samantha Ronson "a very long time." The 22-year-old actress casually told the co-host of the syndicated radio program "Loveline" on Monday that she’s been dating the 31-year-old DJ. The pair have appeared in public and been photographed together but have never publicly commented about the extent of their relationship. "You guys, you and Samantha, have been going out for how long now?" DJ Ted Stryker asked. "Like two years, one year, five months, two months?" "For a very long time," Lohan said after laughing. Stryker interviewed Ronson while she took a break from DJing at TV Guide’s Emmy afterparty Monday night in Los Angeles. Ronson had been discussing her friendship with DJ AM and Travis Barker, who are recovering from severe burns following a plane crash in South Carolina last weekend, before putting Lohan on the phone.
